7 Best Surfer SEO Alternatives in 2026
Surfer starts at $49 a month billed yearly and now bundles AI search tracking into most plans. As of October 2026 the alternatives split by what you want instead: a cheaper content scorer (NeuronWriter from $19 a month billed annually, Frase from $39), a simpler premium editor (Clearscope from $129 a month), content inside a full SEO suite (Semrush Content Toolkit at $60 a month), topic strategy for large sites (MarketMuse, demo-priced), or an AI-visibility-first writer (Scalenut, from $59 a month). Most of them now track whether ChatGPT or Google's AI features mention you; check which assistants before you switch.

Every price and feature below was checked on the vendor's own pricing and product pages on 4 October 2026, in US dollars before tax. Treat them as 'as of October 2026'. Surfer's site now presents it as 'Positive Surfer', part of a group called Positive; the product and pricing are still Surfer's.

Billed monthly, the same plans are $59, $114, $209, $343 and $92. Every plan has a 'Start for Free' button, but we could not get the trial terms to display, so ask Surfer for those.

The alternatives, one by one
Clearscope: the simple premium editor
Essentials is $129 a month (50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations and 20 drafts a month) and Business $399 (300 queries and pages, a dedicated account manager), with a 14-day free trial and no contracts. It grades drafts against term suggestions and has an AI drafting and editing workflow. Its pricing page lists query tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini, while its homepage mentions brand mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. Best for: editorial teams that want one clean grade per draft. Limit: higher entry price than Surfer's Discovery plan.
Frase: briefs, GEO and content decay
Starter is $39 a month billed yearly or $49 monthly (one site, 10 articles, 50 audit pages, AI visibility tracking), Professional $103 or $129 (5 sites, 40 articles) and Scale $239 or $299. Every page gets a search score and an AI-readiness score; Frase also builds research-based briefs, tunes content to get cited by AI, and watches for decay and drafts fixes. It monitors where AI search cites you across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI daily. 7-day trial, no card. Best for: small teams that want AI citation tracking that includes Claude at a low price. Limit: article counts are capped per plan.
NeuronWriter: the budget scorer
Priced by content analyses: Bronze $23 a month ($19 billed annually) for 25 analyses and two projects, Silver $45 ($37) for 50, Gold $69 ($57) for 75 with a content designer, plagiarism checks and API, up to Diamond $117 ($97) for 150. Every plan includes AI-monitored questions across Google, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity. 7-day trial on Gold terms and a 30-day money-back guarantee on a first purchase. Best for: freelancers and small agencies optimising many articles on a budget. Limit: analysis counts, not documents, set the price.
Semrush Content Toolkit: content inside your SEO suite
$60 a month for topic ideas, an SEO brief generator, AI and SEO content optimisation, brand voices and a WordPress integration, with five SEO-boosted articles a month (10 more for $30) and a 7-day trial. Semrush's SEO Writing Assistant for Google Docs, WordPress and Word is still documented. AI visibility tracking sits in Semrush's separate SEO and AI Search plans, not in this toolkit. Semrush is now an Adobe company. Best for: teams already on Semrush. Limit: you need a second Semrush plan for AI tracking.
Scalenut: built around AI visibility
Starter is $59 a month, Plus $89 and Professional $199 billed monthly, each with a 7-day free trial; the annual prices shown when we checked ($24, $36 and $80 a month) were a time-limited 60% discount, so plan on the monthly figures. Starter tracks 10 prompts weekly on ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews alongside GEO article writing and optimisation; Professional tracks 100 prompts and adds Perplexity. Best for: teams whose main content goal is getting cited in AI answers. Limit: the low prices are promotional.
MarketMuse: topic strategy for large sites
Plans are organised by tracked topics, briefs and strategy documents: a free plan (one user, 10 queries a month), Optimize, Research and Strategy (10,000 tracked topics, 20 briefs a month, five users). The pricing page shows no prices; paid plans start with a demo, and there is a free trial link. We found no AI-search tracking on its pricing page. Best for: large content libraries planned by topic cluster. Limit: you cannot price it without a sales call.
Fenn: a different job
Fenn is not a content-scoring editor. It finds questions your buyers ask from the sources you choose (subreddits, YouTube channels, competitor blogs) and from gaps in what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok say about you, then drafts answer-first articles of 500 to 800 words that mark facts only you can supply instead of inventing them. Drafts wait in a review queue until an owner or editor approves them, and you publish them yourself. Plans start at $29 a month after a demo. Teams that want a term-by-term content grade keep one of the editors above.
Pick by why you are leaving Surfer

|---|---|
| Price | NeuronWriter, Frase Starter |
| Want a simpler editor | Clearscope |
| Want Claude in AI tracking | Frase |
| Already pay for Semrush | Semrush Content Toolkit |
| Content strategy across thousands of pages | MarketMuse |
| Content mainly for AI citations | Scalenut, Frase |
A note on content scores
Every tool here scores a draft against pages that already rank, mostly by terms and topics covered. That helps catch gaps; it does not tell you whether the page answers the question better than those pages, or whether an assistant will quote it. Use the score as a checklist, then edit for a direct answer in the first lines, specific facts and clear structure, which is what makes a passage easy to quote.
