7 Best llms.txt Generators in 2026
Most sites can generate llms.txt free. As of October 2026: on WordPress, Yoast SEO creates it automatically in the free plugin, Rank Math's free module builds it once you pick post types, and AIOSEO generates it in its free Lite version (llms-full.txt needs Pro). Docs platforms GitBook and Mintlify publish llms.txt and llms-full.txt automatically. Firecrawl's generator crawls any site but is no longer maintained. For a small custom site, writing the file by hand against the llmstxt.org format takes under an hour. Whichever you use, remember the file is a courtesy to AI tools, not proof of AI visibility.

Every tool below was checked on its vendor's own feature pages, docs, changelogs and pricing pages on 4 October 2026. Prices are list prices before tax, 'as of October 2026'. Rank Math showed prices in euros to us, which may depend on where you view the page.
What llms.txt is, in one paragraph
llms.txt is a proposal by Jeremy Howard, first published on 3 September 2024 at llmstxt.org and updated to a second version in August 2026. It is a Markdown file at /llms.txt (or under a sub-path such as /docs/llms.txt) that gives language-model tools a curated map of a site. The only required part is an H1 with the site or project name; a short blockquote summary and H2 sections listing links with notes are optional. The proposal also suggests offering clean Markdown versions of pages. llms-full.txt, a single file with the full text of the site, is a convention some vendors added; the llmstxt.org page does not define it.

The generators, one by one
Yoast SEO
Yoast calls llms.txt 'built into Yoast, free for everyone': it is in the free plugin, generated automatically with no setup, with a manual mode for choosing pages and a preview before publishing. It arrived in Yoast SEO 25.3 in June 2025, manual page selection came in 25.6 in July 2025, and Yoast SEO for Shopify added it on 31 March 2026. Yoast Premium is $118.80 a year before VAT, but llms.txt does not need it. Best for: WordPress or Shopify sites that already use Yoast. Limit: Yoast's feature page does not mention llms-full.txt.
Rank Math
The llms.txt module is in the free plugin. You switch it on in the dashboard, then choose post types and taxonomies, a limit on items (100 by default) and any extra text; Rank Math's help page notes the file stays empty until you configure it. Its free changelog shows active work, including a September 2026 change to match the latest llms.txt proposal. PRO starts at €7.99 a month billed annually, as shown to us, and lists an 'advanced' llms.txt generator. Best for: WordPress sites that want control over what goes in. Limit: one setup step before anything is published.
All in One SEO (AIOSEO)
AIOSEO's feature page says Lite users can generate llms.txt automatically, choosing post types, categories and taxonomies, and that llms-full.txt and Markdown settings need Pro. Paid plans start at $49.50 for the first year (Basic, one site), renewing at $99. Best for: WordPress sites that want llms-full.txt from a plugin. Limit: the pricing page does not list llms.txt per plan, so the free and paid split comes from the feature page.
GitBook
GitBook publishes AI-friendly formats for every docs site automatically: a Markdown version of each page, /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt and an MCP server. Its pricing page says this is on all plans, including Free ($0 per site with one user); Premium is $65 per site a month billed annually plus $12 per user. Support for llms.txt was added in January 2025 and llms-full.txt in June 2025. Best for: product documentation. Limit: GitBook-hosted docs only.
Mintlify
Mintlify hosts an llms.txt at the root of every project that lists all pages, kept up to date with no maintenance, plus llms-full.txt; adding your own file at the root overrides the generated one, and links point to Markdown versions of pages. The Starter plan is $0 a month; Pro is $450 a month billed annually. Mintlify's docs state no plan restriction for llms.txt, but its pricing table does not list it as a line item. Best for: developer documentation. Limit: Mintlify-hosted docs only.
Firecrawl
Firecrawl's llms.txt endpoint crawls up to 100 URLs of any public site and returns llms.txt, and optionally llms-full.txt with full page text, at one credit per URL; its free plan includes 1,000 credits a month without a card. Firecrawl's docs say the endpoint stays active but has not been maintained since 30 June 2025, and point to an open-source script instead. Best for: a one-off draft for a site with no plugin option. Limit: unmaintained, and the file does not update itself when pages change.
Writing it by hand
For a site with a few dozen important pages, a hand-written file is often better than a generated one, because you choose what an AI tool should read first. A minimal version: an H1 with the site name, a one-sentence summary in a blockquote, then H2 sections such as Docs, Product and Optional, each a list of links with a short note. Serve it as plain text at /llms.txt and update it when key pages change. Vercel's Academy, for example, shows how to serve llms.txt and llms-full.txt from route handlers in a Next.js app.
What llms.txt will not do
Publishing the file does not make AI crawlers able to reach your pages, does not put your brand in answers, and does not prove anything about visibility. Retrieval depends on robots rules, firewall settings and server-rendered content; citations depend on whether your pages answer the question better than the alternatives. Treat llms.txt as a cheap courtesy that sits on top of those basics. Our piece on why llms.txt does not prove AI visibility covers the measurable checks to run instead.
Fenn includes llms.txt in its readiness check of a site's main page, alongside AI-crawler access, structured data, answer-first content, freshness and internal links. If the file is missing, the fix comes with a ready-to-paste prompt for your developer or AI coding tool; Fenn does not publish it for you. It is not a generator plugin, so on WordPress or a docs platform, the tools above are the faster route.
How to choose
- WordPress: use the SEO plugin you already have. Yoast and AIOSEO generate automatically; Rank Math after one setup step.
- Docs on GitBook or Mintlify: it is already published. Check /llms.txt on your docs domain.
- Custom site with under 100 key pages: write it by hand and keep it in version control.
- Large custom site: generate a first draft with a crawler, then edit it by hand. A file that lists everything is no more useful than a sitemap.
- After publishing, fetch /llms.txt with an AI crawler's user agent to confirm your CDN serves it.
FAQ
Is there a free llms.txt generator?
Yes. As of October 2026, Yoast SEO, Rank Math and AIOSEO generate it in their free WordPress plugins, GitBook includes it on its free plan, Mintlify on its $0 Starter plan, and Firecrawl's generator runs on its free credits. Writing it by hand is also free.
What is the difference between llms.txt and llms-full.txt?
llms.txt is a short Markdown index of key pages with notes. llms-full.txt, a convention used by GitBook, Mintlify, AIOSEO Pro and Firecrawl, contains the full text of the pages in one file. The llmstxt.org proposal defines only llms.txt.
Do ChatGPT and Google use llms.txt?
Consumption is not well documented, and we found no public commitment from a major assistant to read it as a ranking or citation input. Publish it if it is cheap for you, and measure AI visibility by what assistants actually say and cite.
Where should llms.txt go?
At the root of the site, as /llms.txt. The proposal also allows a file under a sub-path, such as /docs/llms.txt, to describe only that section.
