Semrush vs Ahrefs in 2026: Pricing, AI, Agencies

By Fenn8 min readAgenciesToolsComparison

Semrush and Ahrefs cost about the same at entry: Semrush's SEO plan is $139 a month and Ahrefs Lite is $129, both with up to 17% off billed yearly. They differ where agencies feel it. Semrush tracks rankings daily (500 keywords on its SEO plan), has a 7-day trial and a free plan, and sells white-label client reports as a $20 a month add-on. Ahrefs updates Rank Tracker weekly on every plan, has no trial, includes API and MCP access from Lite, and charges $40 to $80 a month per extra user. For AI visibility, Semrush's $199 Starter plan tracks 50 prompts daily, while Ahrefs includes 150 to 600 prompt checks a month and sells Brand Radar from $199. Pick Semrush for daily tracking and client reporting, Ahrefs for API access and per-seat simplicity on small teams. Prices as of October 2026.

Semrush vs Ahrefs: Pricing, AI, Agencies

Prices and limits below come from semrush.com/prices, semrush.com/pricing/ai, ahrefs.com/pricing and the vendors' help pages, checked on 25 October 2026. US dollars, monthly billing unless stated. Both vendors change plans often; Semrush's top plan moved to price-on-request this year.

Pricing for agencies

At the entry level the two are $10 apart, but the plan that fits an agency is usually one step up. Semrush's Pro+ ($299, or $248.17 billed yearly) monitors 15 websites, tracks 1,500 keywords daily and adds 100 AI prompts, historical data and multi-location tracking. Ahrefs Standard ($249) covers 20 non-verified projects, 2,000 tracked keywords, 2 years of history, 300 AI prompt checks a month and unlimited credits per user. Above that, Ahrefs Advanced is $449 for 50 projects and 5,000 keywords, while Semrush Advanced, for 40 or more websites, is now priced on request.

Seats change the maths. Ahrefs includes one user on Lite, Standard and Advanced and lets you add up to 2, 5 or 10 more at $40, $60 or $80 a month each, so a five-person team on Standard pays $249 plus 4 x $60, $489 a month. Semrush lists additional users from $45 a month on its pricing page; confirm the rate for your plan at checkout.

Rank tracking

This is the clearest difference. Semrush's help center says Position Tracking data is generally updated daily within 24 to 48 hours, and that updates cannot be scheduled manually. Ahrefs' pricing page lists the Rank Tracker update frequency as weekly on every plan, including Enterprise. If clients expect to see yesterday's movement, Semrush or a dedicated daily tracker fits; if you report monthly, Ahrefs' weekly points are enough.

AI search visibility

Both now sell AI answer tracking. Semrush builds it into its SEO + AI Search plans (50 prompts tracked daily on Starter, 100 on Pro+, unlimited on Advanced) and sells a separate AI Visibility Toolkit at $99 a month per domain, billed yearly, which tracks 25 custom prompts daily with mentions from ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity. Ahrefs includes 150, 300 or 600 checks on AI prompts a month on Lite, Standard and Advanced, where one check is one prompt on one platform in one location. Brand Radar, its AI brand research tool across 502 million+ prompts from its database, starts at $199 a month, and custom prompt packages add 2,500 checks for $50 a month, 7,000 for $100 or 25,000 for $250.

Client reporting

Semrush sells reporting as small add-ons: Base Report ($10 a month) pulls data from 20+ Semrush tools plus Google Analytics and Search Console, with daily, weekly or monthly scheduling and PDF export; Pro Report ($20 a month) adds 20+ external integrations, delivery at a set time, branding and white-labeling, AI summaries and link sharing. Ahrefs' Report Builder is $99 a month for 50 reports and 500 widgets with scheduling. Neither replaces a dedicated agency reporting tool for many clients; see our comparison of SEO reporting tools for agencies.

API and integrations

Ahrefs lists API and MCP access on every paid plan from Lite. Semrush lists MCP access on its Starter plan and reserves advanced API data integration for Advanced. If you plan to pull keyword or backlink data into your own dashboards or AI tools, that difference matters more than the headline price.

What neither one does

Both tell you where a client ranks and, increasingly, whether an assistant mentions them. Neither drafts the fix. Fenn asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok the questions a client's buyers ask, shows who is named and which sources are cited, and turns each gap into a site fix with a ready prompt or an answer-first page draft that waits for your approval. It does not do keyword research, backlinks or rank tracking, so agencies run it beside Semrush or Ahrefs. Plans start at $29 a month, set up after a demo.

FAQ

Is Semrush or Ahrefs cheaper?

At entry, Ahrefs Lite ($129 a month) is $10 cheaper than Semrush's SEO plan ($139). For a 15 to 20 site agency, Ahrefs Standard ($249) is cheaper than Semrush Pro+ ($299) for one user, but extra Ahrefs seats cost $60 each on Standard. As of October 2026.

Does Ahrefs have a free trial?

No. Ahrefs' pricing page says it does not run discounts; site owners can use Ahrefs Free for limited Site Explorer and Site Audit data on their own sites, and a $29 Starter plan covers light research. Semrush offers a 7-day trial and a free plan.

Which is better for rank tracking?

Semrush, if you need daily data: its Position Tracking updates daily within 24 to 48 hours. Ahrefs updates its Rank Tracker weekly on every plan.

Which tracks AI search visibility better?

They measure it differently. Semrush tracks a set number of prompts daily inside its plans, from 50 on Starter; Ahrefs gives a monthly allowance of prompt checks and sells Brand Radar for research across its prompt database. Test both with your client's real buyer questions before choosing.
