Free Rank Tracking Tools: 6 Options and Their Real Limits

By Fenn7 min readToolsBudgetFundamentals

The best free rank tracking tool for most sites is Google Search Console, because it reports the average position of your own pages by query, page, country and device at no cost. If you need a position for a named keyword list over time, a free Semrush account tracks up to 10 keywords for one website with daily updates. The free version of SEO PowerSuite's Rank Tracker checks keywords by hand, but it does not save projects or run scheduled tasks; those start on Professional at $179 a year. One-off checkers such as seo.ai's keyword rank checker answer a single question with no login. Everything else called free is usually a trial: Keyword.com, Nightwatch, SE Ranking and Serprobot give you 14 days, Wincher and ProRankTracker 7.

Free Rank Tracking Tools: 6 Options and Their Real Limits

Facts below come from each vendor's own pages, read on 2 November 2026 through a US connection. Free plans change often, so check the limits on the vendor's page before you build a client process on one.

Google Search Console

Search Console is the only source here that reports what actually happened in Google for your site. Open the Performance report, filter by page, query, country or device, and read average position. Google defines that value as the topmost position your link occupied, averaged across the impressions in the period. Its help page also warns that the position you see in a real search can differ because of search history, location and other variables.

That definition is why Search Console and a rank tracker rarely agree. It is also why Search Console is a poor tool for answering where you ranked in Chicago on mobile this morning, and a good one for answering whether a page is moving over a month. It only covers sites you have verified, so it cannot show a competitor's positions.

SEO PowerSuite Rank Tracker (free version)

Rank Tracker is a desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux. SEO PowerSuite says the free version can check unlimited keywords in Google or alternative search engines, on desktop or mobile. Its license comparison lists saving projects and scheduled SEO tasks as unavailable in the free version; both start on Rank Tracker Professional at $179 a year. It allows one competitor per project in the free version, 5 in Professional and 40 in Enterprise.

That makes the free version a manual checker: you run each check yourself, on your own machine, and the project is not kept for next time. It is useful for a one-off look at many keywords, not for recurring tracking. For month-over-month reporting you need a paid license or a free tracker that keeps history, such as Semrush's 10-keyword allowance.

Ahrefs Free

Ahrefs Free, formerly Webmaster Tools, gives free-forever limited access on an unlimited number of verified websites, including 5,000 crawl credits and Site Explorer views of which keywords your site ranks for in Google and which pages drive organic traffic. That makes it useful as a second opinion on your own site. It is not a tracked keyword list: Ahrefs lists Rank Tracker at 750 keywords and up on paid plans, with weekly updates.

One-off checkers

seo.ai's keyword rank checker needs no login: enter a keyword, a domain and a country, and it checks the top 100 results. Tools like this are fine for a single question from a client on a call. They give you no history, so they only become tracking if you write each result down with its date, country and device.

Semrush Free

Semrush's free plan is $0 with no card. Its Position Tracking documentation lists 10 keywords across 1 website for accounts without the SEO Toolkit, and Semrush's own guide to the free account says the report updates daily. That is a real, if small, tracking campaign for your most important terms. Research tools are capped at 10 queries a day. The paid SEO Toolkit starts at $139 a month for 500 keywords across 5 websites.

Free trials worth timing well

A trial cannot replace a free tool, but it can answer a one-time question such as a baseline before a migration. Start one when the question is live, not the week you sign up.

A free rank tracking sheet you can copy

If you only watch a handful of keywords, a sheet with these columns is enough. Check on the same day each week, from the same place, in a private window, and treat small moves as noise.

DateKeywordPage that should rankCountry and devicePosition seenSearch Console averageNote
2026-11-03example keyword/your-pageUS, mobile1214.3Title changed last week

Keep the Search Console column beside your manual check. When the two diverge for several weeks, trust the trend in Search Console, since it reflects real impressions rather than one search from one device.

When free stops being enough

  • You report to a client who expects positions by city or device on a fixed date.
  • You need competitors' positions over time. Search Console cannot show them, and the SEO PowerSuite free version stops at one per project.
  • You track more keywords than you can check by hand each week.
  • Someone other than you needs access without using your computer.

The cheapest paid options are small. Keyword.com starts at $4 a month for 50 keywords ($3 billed yearly) and Serprobot charges $4.99 a month per bot, with each bot checking 75 keywords every 24 hours. Our guide to what rank tracking costs compares larger volumes.

Where Fenn fits

Fenn is not a rank tracker and has no free plan. It asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok the questions your buyers ask when you start a check, then turns the gaps into site fixes and page drafts for you to approve. It sits beside whichever tracker you choose. Plans start at $29 a month and are set up after a demo.

FAQ

Is there a completely free rank tracker?

Google Search Console is free for sites you verify, and a free Semrush account tracks up to 10 keywords for one website. SEO PowerSuite's Rank Tracker has a free desktop version for manual checks, without saved projects or scheduling. Most other offers are trials.

How do I check my keyword rankings for free?

Open Search Console, go to Performance, select Average position, and filter by the query or page. For a single keyword on a site you do not own, use a one-off checker and note the country and device.

Is Search Console accurate for rankings?

It is accurate for what it measures: the topmost position of your link averaged across impressions. It is not the position one person would see on one day, and Google says that can differ.

Does Ahrefs have a free rank tracker?

Ahrefs Free shows which keywords a verified site ranks for, but Rank Tracker with a set keyword list is listed from 750 keywords on paid plans.

What is the cheapest paid rank tracker?

Of those we checked, Keyword.com starts at $4 a month for 50 keywords and Serprobot at $4.99 a month for 75 keywords checked every 24 hours.

Put this to work on your own website.

Fenn finds what your customers ask, drafts the articles and site fixes, and measures what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok say about you — with every change waiting for your approval.
