ChatGPT SEO: How to Get Your Brand Into ChatGPT Answers
ChatGPT SEO means making your pages reachable and quotable for ChatGPT's search features, and making your brand present in the sources ChatGPT reads. Start with access: OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search, and that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, so allow it in robots.txt and at your CDN. GPTBot is a separate training crawler you can block without leaving search. Then give each important page a direct answer in its first lines, with specific facts, and earn real mentions on the third-party pages ChatGPT cites in your category. Measure by asking ChatGPT your buyers' questions repeatedly and recording whether you are named and cited, because answers change between runs.

The crawler facts below come from OpenAI's own crawler documentation (platform.openai.com/docs/bots), read on 25 October 2026. OpenAI does not publish ranking factors for ChatGPT; the page advice in this post is ours, and we label it as such.
How ChatGPT finds your pages
ChatGPT can answer from its model or, through its search features, from web results. For the search path, OpenAI documents three agents, each controlled separately:
| Agent | What OpenAI says it does | If you block it |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Surfaces websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features | Your site is not shown in ChatGPT search answers, though it can still appear as a navigational link |
| GPTBot | Crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's foundation models | Signals your content should not be used for training; search is unaffected |
| ChatGPT-User | Visits a page when a user's question or a Custom GPT action needs it; not an automatic crawler | OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to these user-initiated visits, and it is not used for search inclusion |
OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and allowing requests from its published IP ranges, and says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to take effect for search. If both OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot are allowed, it may use one crawl for both purposes.
Step 1: make sure OAI-SearchBot can reach you
- Read robots.txt for rules that block OAI-SearchBot by name, or block all bots with a wildcard.
- Check your CDN, firewall or bot-protection settings. A challenge page or a 403 served to OAI-SearchBot blocks it as surely as robots.txt does.
- Fetch a few key pages with OAI-SearchBot's user agent and confirm you get a 200 and your real HTML, not a challenge page. Our crawler verification guide shows how.
- Decide on GPTBot separately. Blocking it is a training choice and does not remove you from ChatGPT search.
Step 2: make pages easy to quote
Our recommendations, not OpenAI statements:
- Answer the question in the first one or two sentences, before background or a story.
- Use specific, checkable facts: prices with dates, limits, steps, named options. Vague claims are hard to cite.
- Keep important content in the HTML the server sends, not only in scripts that run later.
- Use clear headings that match how people ask, and keep one topic per section.
- Show who wrote or checked the page and when it was last updated.
Step 3: be present where ChatGPT looks
Answers often lean on third-party pages: comparison articles, reviews, forums and documentation. Ask ChatGPT your buyers' questions and list the domains it cites. If a category comparison that it cites leaves you out, the fix is outreach to that publisher with accurate information, not more pages on your own site. Google's guide to its own AI features warns that seeking inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem, and the same logic applies here: earn mentions that would exist anyway.
Step 4: measure it properly
There is no ChatGPT equivalent of Search Console. Measuring means sampling: a fixed set of buyer questions, asked several times, with the answers saved. Record for each run whether your brand is named, where it appears, which competitors are named and which URLs are cited. Because the same question can produce a different answer on the next run, compare rates over many runs, not single screenshots. Watch referral traffic from chatgpt.com in your analytics as a second signal.
| Tool | Entry price | Tracks ChatGPT at entry |

| Peec AI Starter | $95 a month, 50 prompts | Yes, as one of 3 chosen models |

A 30-minute ChatGPT visibility check
- Write down 10 questions a buyer would ask ChatGPT before choosing a product like yours, in their words, not your keywords.
- Ask each question in a fresh chat three times and save the full answers with the date.
- Mark each answer: were you named, in what position, which competitors were named, and which URLs were cited?
- List the cited domains that appear more than once; those are the sources ChatGPT leans on for your category.
- Open robots.txt and your CDN's bot settings and confirm OAI-SearchBot is allowed.
- Pick the three questions where you are missing and rewrite the page that should answer each, answer first.
- Repeat the same questions in a few weeks and compare rates, not single answers.
What does not work
- Promises of a guaranteed ChatGPT ranking: OpenAI publishes no ranking formula, so no one can guarantee placement.
- Blocking OAI-SearchBot to keep content out of training: that removes you from search answers; GPTBot is the training control.
- Thin pages for every phrasing of a question: they compete with each other and add nothing quotable.
- Relying on an llms.txt file: OpenAI's crawler page does not mention it, and Google says it has no effect on Google Search.
Where Fenn fits
Fenn runs this loop. It asks ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok your buyers' questions when you start a check, reports share of answers, share of voice, position, sentiment, competitors and cited sources, and checks your main page for AI-crawler access, llms.txt, structured data, answer-first content, freshness and internal links. Each failure becomes a fix with a ready prompt, and missing topics become answer-first drafts that flag facts only you can supply. You approve and publish every change. Plans start at $29 a month, set up after a demo.
FAQ
How do I rank in ChatGPT?
Allow OAI-SearchBot so ChatGPT's search can reach your pages, put direct, specific answers at the top of the pages that matter, and earn mentions on the third-party sources ChatGPT cites. Then measure with repeated questions; OpenAI publishes no ranking factors.
Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT?
Not from ChatGPT search. OpenAI says GPTBot is for training and OAI-SearchBot for search, and each setting is independent. Blocking OAI-SearchBot is what removes you from ChatGPT search answers.
How long does a robots.txt change take in ChatGPT?
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours from a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust.
Does ChatGPT use llms.txt?
OpenAI's crawler documentation does not mention llms.txt, and we found no OpenAI statement that ChatGPT search reads it. Treat it as optional; crawler access and clear pages matter more.
Is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?
The page basics overlap: crawlable pages, clear answers, accurate facts. What differs is the crawler you must allow, the absence of a first-party report like Search Console, and the need to sample answers repeatedly to measure.
Put this to work on your own website.
Fenn finds what your customers ask, drafts the articles and site fixes, and measures what ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Grok say about you — with every change waiting for your approval.
